Sami gets nod to make herbal drug for glaucoma

 

Sami Labs has said that it has received approval from the Drughs Controller General of India to manufature and market a new drug for glaucoma. The drug, Forskolin 1% Ophthalmic Solution with the brand name Ocuors, has been devloped from the her Coleus Forskohlii. " This is a first for India - it is the first drug that has been developed from natural resources to be given approval," Said Dr.Muhammed Majeed, Chairman and Managing Director Samilabs. Glaucoma is a degenerative disease of the optic nerve and affects approsimately 1.2 crore people in India. It is one of the leading causes for blindness.

Sami Labs claims that it holds a US patent for the prepartion of Forskolin from Coleus Forskohlii, and is primarily used as a lean body mass product.For the last four years, research had been on for using the molecule for treating glaucoma, "In the 80s, pharma major Hoechst had done research on the use of Forkolin in treating glaucome, but dropped the studies midway. We took it up and sucessfully made a solution out of the molecule," said Dr. Majeed

Sami is now cultivating the plant Coleus Forskohlii over 10,000 acres of land in Tamil Naud, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. Currently, a drugh for psoriasis is undergoing phase III clincal trials, Also in the pipeline are drugs for asthma and brest cancer, Dr. Majeed said.
